Christian Horner says 'nothing major' wrong with RB10 despite Jerez test struggle

Critics have blamed the tight packaging at the rear of the RB10 for the car overheating as it completed just a handful of laps in Spain

Christian Horner has defended Adrian Newey's bold design for Red Bull's hitherto-malfunctioning RB10 and insisted the car's flaws are "nothing major".

During what proved to be a nightmare week for the team, Red Bull and their RB10 charger - hailed by Horner on its birth as the "most complicated car in the history of Formula 1" - completed a meagre 21 laps over four days of testing in Jerez. By contrast, Mercedes, the newly-installed favourites for the Constructors' Championship, put over 300 under the belt of their W05 as they stole an early march on the reigning World Champions.

Red Bull's acute shortage of running, in part a consequence of Renault's struggles with their ERS and in part a result of the ultra-tight packaging at the back of RB10 that led to the car overheating even during its brief time on track - saw both Horner and Newey leave the Jerez test early, with the Red Bull technical chief "going back to the drawing board" in the words of driver Daniel Ricciardo.

Yet Horner is adamant that there is no cause for panic - or reason to point the finger at Newey's design given that all of the Renault runners were short on mileage at Jerez.

"There's a few things we needed to tighten up on our side but nothing major and obviously Renault have some issues that they are tidying up as well," Horner told Sky Sports News. "But these cars are so complicated that even small problems can cause big failures."

However, despite the sense of calm being exuded by Horner, the Red Bull boss shied away from offering any sort of assurance that a fix will be in place for next week's test in Bahrain.

"Obviously there's quite a bit to do but there's still a fair bit of time before the first race. The Bahrain test next week is an important test and we are working very hard at both Renault and Milton Keynes," he said.

"We don't want another test like Jerez but that's what testing is for - you sort your problems out so as not to have them at the races."
