Sutil eager for Sauber debut
Adrian Sutil is eager to drive into the unknown with Sauber at the upcoming Jerez test as he prepares to grapple with the "very exciting" task of mastering F1's rules revolution.
The sport's leap into the unknown this year will be particularly acute for Sutil following his decision to leave Force India, requiring the German to get to grips with unfamiliar operating procedures and systems as well as F1's brave new world when he debuts for Sauber in southern Spain at the end of the month.
"We don't have a simulator at the moment, so that's the only downside," Sutil told Sky Sports News. "The car looks quite good, but we have no reference at the moment. The nose looks quite strange, but everyone is in the same boat.
"Let's see how it goes in Jerez. It's going to be exciting, not everyone will have the full package on their cars, but it's a new car, a new team, new rules, so very exciting.
"Normally you have an idea of how the car will be because normally it is just an evolution of how the car was last year and, in the best cases, a little bit faster. But this year it could be slower or it could be quicker, but I expect it to be a little bit slower. It will be trickier to drive but quicker in a straight line - that's all I know at the moment!"
After driving for Force India in 2013, Sutil has effectively swapped seats with Nico Hulkenberg for the new season. According to the 31-year-old, the lure of a fresh challenge and the chance to commute directly - and quickly - to work from his home made the opportunity to join Sauber impossible to resist.
"We were in contact since February 2012 and at the end of the year I felt that I needed a change. Sauber is a very, very good team to go to," he said.
"They are based close to where I live, I really enjoy not travelling so much any more - it is just one hour to travel to the team - and I can use this time more efficiently. It was my dream team to go to."
