Former Ferrari driver Eddie Irvine has been sentenced to six months in jail by an Italian court for his part in a nightclub brawl six years ago, although is thought unlikely to have to serve the term.

The 48-year-old Northern Irishman along with Gabriele Moratti, the son of a former Milan mayor, were found guilty of "mutual injury" in the incident in the VIP section of the Hollywood nightclub in Milan in December 2008.

However, Reuters reported that a lawyer for Moratti had said that the sentence was likely to be suspended and so neither man would go to jail.

Irvine competed in 145 grands prix for Jordan, Ferrari and Jaguar between 1993 and 2002 with his most successful season coming in 1999 when he claimed all four of his career race wins and finished a close second to McLaren's Mika Hakkinen in the Drivers' Championship.
