Fernando Alonso: A strong damage limitation job
Fernando Alonso says the Canadian GP has emphasised that Ferrari need to improve their qualifying form if he is to challenge title rival Sebastian Vettel head-on.
Sunday's Montreal race marked the fourth time this season that the double World Champion has improved on his starting berth in the race, but the fact that he started five places back on title rival Sebastian Vettel meant he was never in position to realistically challenge the German for the victory.
Alonso has yet to start higher than third in seven races this year, and in the last three events has qualified on the third row, and while more than content with another strong salvage operation, the Spaniard said it was vital Ferrari found a breakthrough in what are long-running attempts to improve their single-lap pace.
"I'm happy," Alonso told Sky Sports F1 after moving ahead of Kimi Raikkonen into second place in the standings.

"Obviously we want to finish in front of our main competitors in the championship. With Sebastian obviously we could not do it today but he did pole position, he did a very dominant race so we just need to congratulate him and just do a better job next time.
"With Kimi it was a good weekend because we scored many points and he didn't, but we need to improve - especially qualifying. If we start up in the front with Sebastian we can fight a little bit closer."
Alonso admitted there had been little wrong with the F138's longer-run pace through the weekend but conceded that neither he nor the team had maximised their potential on Saturday - something they need to improve next time out.
"We have a strong weekend in terms of pace. We complicated things maybe yesterday ourselves because with the conditions we were not very happy. With cold conditions the car is not performing well, but also I didn't put a lap together on qualifying," he added.
"As I said, we maybe complicated things for ourselves, but we recovered well in the race and in Silverstone we need to do a better weekend in general."
