The PDC World Darts Championship is back and this year is a special occasion with the 20th edition of the event being screened live on Sky Sports once again.

We've taken it right back to the beginning as Soccer Saturday's Jeff Stelling talks about hosting the very first World Darts Championship to be held on Sky Sports 20 years ago, when Dennis Priestley claimed the inaugural title.

This came after the well-publicised split in darts, and the brave new world of darts has eventually led to the big-money operation that is the PDC today, with events being held all around the world and huge financial prizes now at stake.

From humble beginnings, again this year the 20th PDC world darts champion will pocket an incredible £200,000 in an event where prize money totals £1 million.

Sky Sports has been at the forefront of this transformation in darts, from the Circus Tavern to the Alexandra Palace, the introduction of walk-on music and the famous walk-on girls, the innovations have kept on coming and darts has now become the hottest ticket in town.

"It's was all a new beginning for us," said Preistley. "We started from humble beginnings but we've gone on to great heights.

Eric Bristow agreed, adding: "When we moved to join the PDC we were just a small band of players, then we joined up with Sky and that's when everything changed."

This year the players will play for the newly-made Sid Waddell Trophy - named in honour of the legendary Sky Sports commentator who helped make darts the high-profile event it is today.

Again Sky Sports will have live coverage of every arrow thrown in anger from the Ally Pally oche, and we'll have full coverage and live scores on the website and all the mobile apps.
