Wes Newton: Yet to win a major title

Sky Bet

Wes Newton is still chasing that major title that many believe will come his way, but he continues to keep knocking on the door.

The 36-year-old from Fleetwood is getting ever closer to breaking that duck though as he continually makes the last eight of the big events.

Always a talent but without realising his potential, Newton took the step up in 2011 when he made his first final at a major, eventually losing to James Wade at the UK Open.

Fact box

  • Date of birth: 27.08.77
  • Birthplace: Blackpool
  • Nickname: The Warrior
  • Major titles: None
  • World Championship best: Quarter-finals (once)
  • Walk-on music: Crazy, Crazy Nights

His progress continued in 2012 with a run to the final of the European Championship - where Simon Whitlock beat him - while he reached the semi-finals of the Grand Prix, won Group Seven at the Champions League and reached the last 16 of the Grand Slam of Darts.

For good measure he also threw his first televised nine-darter against Justin Pipe at the Matchplay, a feat which went down a storm among his home crowd at the Winter Gardens.

'The Warrior' never made it beyond the second round of the World Championship between his debut in 2005 and a 2010 defeat to Adrian Lewis but he's raised his game in the last few years by reaching the quarters in both 2011 and 2013.

It means that going into the majors he's often touted as a live outsider, a sign of how far he has come.
