Michael van Gerwen won the German Darts Championship on Sunday night, defeating Gary Anderson 6-2 in the final.

The world No 1 racked up his third straight tournament in Hildesheim, following two UK Open qualifiers last weekend, as he gained a measure of revenge for Anderson's World Championship semi-final win.

Van Gerwen hit tops to take the opening leg in 17 darts before Anderson made it one apiece within 14 shots at the board.

They traded maximums as Van Gerwen edged 2-1 ahead with a 12-darter in the third leg but remarkably Anderson went one better and levelled the score with an 11-dart finish.

But the Dutchman would go on a roll from there, completing another 12-darter with a 151 checkout before bettering his own high standards with a 167 finish to go 4-2 up.

Van Gerwen then hit a 10-darter to make it 5-2 and completed the final victory with another 12-dart finish.

The thrilling contest lasted just 10 minutes with Van Gerwen averaging 117.94. He is now the European Tour's most successful ever player after winning his fourth title in the four years since it was introduced.

Van Gerwen said: "Anderson showed why he is world champion and when he's on form you have to play like this if you're going to beat him.

"It's lovely to be the first player to win four of these European Tour events because they are so hard to win."
