Taylor secures his second win

Peter Wright maintained his superb start to the Premier League season with a resounding 7-3 victory over Simon Whitlock, while Phil Taylor picked up just his second win of the campaign in Nottingham.

Six rounds into his debut season, Wright is still to taste defeat in the tournament and ensured he would stay at the top of the standings for another week as he increased Whitlock's relegation fears.

In truth there only ever looked one outcome to the contest as the World Championship finalist raced out into a 4-0 lead.

Wright set the tone with a maximum in the first leg on the way to breaking and underlined his confidence with a stunning 132 checkout in the third before producing a 13-darter to move four clear.

Whitlock did rally by taking out 52 to break and then held on his own throw to reduce the arrears to 4-2, but any thoughts of a comeback from the Aussie were quickly stamped out by his Scottish opponent who won the next two.

In a final show of defiance Whitlock would finish 126 to keep Wright waiting, but only until the next leg as Snakebite found double-10 at the second time of asking to clinch victory.

Scrappy win for Taylor

Taylor gave himself something to cheer as he took his chances late on to get the better of Dave Chisnall, emerging a 7-5 winner.

The Power once again appeared some way from his fluent best, although Chisnall more than played his part as he landed seven 180s.

Week Six scores

Wright 7-3 Whitlock
Lewis 7-5 Anderson
Van Gerwen 7-1 Newton
Van Barneveld 6-6 Thornton
Taylor 7-5 Chisnall

But he was left to rue two missed doubles which would have given him a 6-5 lead and, after Taylor had stepped in to find double-32, Chisnall missed a single shot at bull for a draw which allowed Taylor to find the same double to secure victory.

Adrian Lewis moved into the top four with a scrappy win by the same scoreline over Gary Anderson following a see-saw encounter.

Lewis looked in control as he surged into a 4-1 lead, but Anderson hit back in fine style to get his nose in front at 5-4.

Lewis responded by taking to next two to guarantee himself a point, but it would turn out better than that for Jackpot as Anderson missed four darts at double, allowing his opponent back to hit tops for a narrow victory.

Van Gerwen on song

"I started like a train and then the minute I came off the boil. Gary put me under a lot of pressure and I just couldn't follow," Lewis told Sky Sports afterwards.

"But he went 5-4 up and I just thought, 'give it everything you've got' and luckily enough for me at the end he missed them darts at double and I pinned the double-top."

Michael van Gerwen was in imperious form as he dismissed Wes Newton in comprehensive style with a thumping 7-1 success.

The Dutchman averaged 105 - although it was as high as 128 towards the end of leg three - and landed six maximums as he retained second place in the table.

Van Gerwen's compatriot Raymond van Barneveld drew 6-6 with Robert Thornton in the night's other encounter.

Thornton had two darts at tops to score a 7-5 win, but could not find his intended target and could only watch on as Barney hit double-19 to claim a point.
