Phil Taylor defied the doubters as he produced two nine-dart finishes on his way to winning the third Coral UK Open qualifier in Wigan.

Just four days after suffering a 7-0 hammering against world champion Michael Van Gerwen on the opening night of the Premier League, Taylor lifted the £10,000 first prize with a 6-2 win over Adrian Lewis in Sunday's final.

The 16-time world champion, making only his fourth competitive appearance with new darts, sealed a remarkable triumph in some style as he nailed his second nine-darter of the day.

Shropshire's David Pallett had earlier taken out a nine-dart leg, and Taylor's match-clincher took the tally of perfect legs over the weekend to six after Terry Jenkins, David Ladley and Dave Chisnall all managed the feat on Friday.

Taylor coasted into the last 16 on Sunday and hit his first nine-darter in a 6-1 thrashing of Andy Hamilton, and he then averaged 108 in another convincing 6-1 victory over Gary Anderson in just 13 minutes.

Taylor booked his place in the final with a 6-3 win over World Championship runner-up Peter Wright with a 106 average, while Lewis edged Steve Beaton 6-5 in the last 16 before beating Mark Webster and Dean Winstanley 6-2.

The Stoke aces shared the opening two legs before Taylor broke throw with a 14-darter in the third, and double one in the next took him 3-1 up.

Lewis pulled a leg back, but Taylor nailed another 14-darter and then took out a superb 127 checkout before providing a supreme grandstand finish.

He hit consecutive scores of 177 and completed a stunning finish with treble 20, treble 17, double 18 to complete a 147 checkout and clinch the title.

Wright had earlier gained revenge for his World Championship final defeat to Van Gerwen with a 6-2 win over the Dutchman in the fourth round, and he then beat Robert Thornton and Jenkins before running into a red-hot Taylor in the semi-finals.

Lakeside champion Stephen Bunting, who won his first PDC title in Saturday's qualifier, hit back from 5-3 down in his first game on Sunday to pip Jelle Klaasen before being knocked out by Hamilton in the last 32.
