Peter Wright reached the final of the PDC World Darts Championship for the first time after recording a comfortable 6-2 victory over Simon Whitlock.

Before this year Wright, who will face Michael van Gerwen in the final, had not gone past the third round at Alexandra Palace but such has been his form over the last two weeks he actually went into the clash as a marginal favourite against world No 4 Whitlock.

He justified that status and more as he raced into a 3-0 lead, former finalist Whitlock having no answer to his consistent scoring and reliability on the doubles.

Whitlock did make things a little more competitive thereafter, but he never realistically threatened to mount a serious comeback against an opponent who averaged 100.24.

"I knew if I gave Simon a sniff he would just pounce all over me. I didn't want that," Wright told Sky Sports.

He added of his preparation for the upcoming final date with van Gerwen: "I'm going to go back, have a rest and party."

Dominant

White lost just one leg in each of the first and third sets, while he took the second by checking out 61 in a deciding leg after Whitlock had fought back from 2-0 down to level things up.

Whitlock was looking for a moment of magic to spark a comeback and looked as though he may have found it when he took out 130 on the bull to break Wright's throw in the opening leg of the fourth set.

He went on to win it 3-1 to leave his opponent ahead in sets by the same scoreline, and 'Snakebite' checked Whitlock's momentum by breaking throw in the first leg of the next set.

He consolidated the advantage with a 110 checkout before hitting double 16 to move within two sets of a place in the final.

Wright hit double top to break Whitlock's throw in the sixth set, which he won without dropping a leg, and then broke the Australian's throw again at the start of the seventh.

Whitlock battled back and took out double top in the deciding leg to keep his hopes alive, but dropped his throw in the eighth set after missing five darts at a double in the second leg, allowing Wright to wrap up the win with ease.
