Richie Burnett: Defeated fifth seed Andy Hamilton at Alexandra Palace

Richie Burnett booked his place in the last 16 of the PDC World Darts Championship after claiming a shock 4-1 victory against Andy Hamilton.

Fifth seed Hamilton, who reached the final at Alexandra Palace in 2012, had beaten Burnett in last year's second round but found himself outclassed by the Welshman at the same stage this time around.

After the pair shared the first two sets the third went to a deciding leg, which Burnett started with seven perfect darts before closing it out by hitting double top.

Former Lakeside champion Burnett then went 3-1 up after controlling the fourth set, only to see Hamilton fight back by taking the first two legs of the next set.

But Burnett turned on the scoring power to get back on level terms and then produced two maximums in the deciding leg as he completed the victory with minimal fuss.

"I was shaking big time (on the stage), but then again I've gone up there when I haven't been shaking and been absolutely useless. I suppose that's the pain you have to go through," Burnett told Sky Sports.

He added: "I'm not frightened of anybody. I can play darts on my day. All the top players know I can play really, really well.

"I've had to learn my apprenticeship again because I took six years away from the game. This is my third year back in the sport of darts and I really think I'm getting there this week."

Saturday's results

Burnett 4-1 Hamilton
Thornton 4-0 B Anderson
White 4-3 Huybrechts

Burnett will face Ian White in round three after the 21st seed also upset the odds somewhat to edge Kim Huybrechts 4-3.

White seemed to be cruising to victory as he raced into a three-set lead but his Belgian opponent showed plenty of grit and determination to fight all the way back to 3-3.

All the momentum was with Huybrechts but White hit double four to break throw in the third leg of the deciding set before wrapping up the win by taking out 73.

Elsewhere in the second round, Robert Thornton cruised past Beau Anderson 4-0 despite feeling under the weather.

The Scottish thrower was visibly struggling throughout the contest and after the match admitted to feeling ill, but still dominated his Australian opponent to progress while losing just two legs.
