Phil Taylor and Michael van Gerwen both eased into the second round of the Cash Converters Players Championship Finals at Butlins in Minehead.

Defending champion Taylor saw off Paul Nicholson 6-2 and will take on Peter Wright next, while top seed Van Gerwen was a 6-1 winner against debutant Jamie Lewis.

Van Gerwen's victory sets up a second-round meeting with ex-world champion Adrian Lewis, who came from 3-1 down to beat Kevin Painter 6-3.

Lewis' fellow Stoke player Andy Hamilton also produced a fine comeback, rallying from 5-1 behind to edge out John Part 6-5.

Canadian Part, wearing glasses on stage for the first time, missed 18 darts at doubles to win the match as Hamilton clawed back level with four straight legs before following a 180 with a 158 checkout to snatch victory.

Hamilton now plays Northern Ireland's Brendan Dolan, who was another come-from-behind winner, battling back from 3-1 down to win a deciding leg with Wayne Jones with a 126 bullseye checkout.

Turned to Jelle

Somerset-based Scot Gary Anderson recovered 4-1 down to defeat Stuart Kellett in a decider and he now plays Jelle Klaasen, who knocked out second seed Dave Chisnall 6-4. Chisnall hit six 180s and a 10-dart finish in defeat.

Steve Beaton hit back from 3-1 and 5-3 down to claim a narrow win over James Wade, hitting a 13-dart leg in the decider as he progressed to a second-round clash with Wes Newton, who beat Andy Smith 6-2.

Taunton's Justin Pipe came from 4-1 down to win 6-4 against Simon Whitlock in a battle of last year's semi-finalists, and he now plays Derby's Jamie Caven, who took a 6-3 win over Colin Lloyd.

Scotland's Robert Thornton averaged 104 to overcome Richie Burnett 6-3, setting up a second-round contest with Raymond van Barneveld, who edged out Mervyn King 6-5.

Terry Jenkins dumped 2012 runner-up Kim Huybrechts out of the tournament with a 6-2 victory over the Belgian, and he now plays Ian White, the first of four Stoke players to win on Friday as he opened the event with a 6-3 success against Ronnie Baxter.
