Phil Taylor: Beat Michael van Gerwen to secure another title
In-form Phil Taylor clinched a third consecutive Championship League Darts title with a convincing 6-3 victory over Michael van Gerwen in the Winners Group Final.
The 16-time world champion - who won the recent Grand Prix in Dublin - continued his dominance of the year's big tournaments as he secured his fourth victory in six years in the event.
Taylor had earned his place in Thursday's Winners Group by taking victory in Group One of the tournament last night, hitting a nine-dart finish on that day.
He subsequently returned to Crondon Park in Essex for the Winners Group, where he topped the league table with six wins from his seven outings - van Gerwen the only man to defeat him in the round-robin stage.
Taylor saw off Andy Hamilton, Kim Huybrechts, Ian White and Wes Newton before succumbing to the Dutchman, but bounced back with further successes over Terry Jenkins and then Richie Burnett.
He would drop only one leg in a semi-final thrashing of Newton where he averaged 106 and took out a 141 checkout to seal his final spot against Gerwen.
There he avenged his earlier defeat in stunning style with a 107 average having reeled off the first five legs without reply.
Van Gerwen threatened to make a match of things by claiming the next three, but Taylor stepped up a gear to hit two 140s in the ninth leg, before taking out 81 for an 11-darter to complete another fine triumph.
