Michael Van Gerwen: "Full of confidence"
Michael Van Gerwen continued his sparkling form as he won his third straight Speedy Services UK Open Qualifier in Wigan.
The Dutch ace followed up last month's double win in Crawley by landing another £6,000 pay day with a comfortable 6-2 victory over Michael Smith in the final.
Gary Anderson and Andy Hamilton had earlier lit up the tournament with nine-dart finishes , although Anderson was edged by Van Gerwen in the deciding leg of their second-round clash.
Van Gerwen went on to oust Ian White, Adrian Gray and Simon Whitlock before whitewashing Paul Nicholson to reach the semi-finals, where he claimed a 6-4 win over Peter Wright with an average close to 107.
The World Championship runner-up took the first two legs of the final in 14 and 13 darts before Smith hit his third 180 on the way to pulling one back.
Van Gerwen nailed another 13-darter as he reeled off three consecutive legs, although Smith gallantly extended the contest by taking out 64.
But it proved only a brief respite as Van Gerwen narrowly missed sealing victory in style with a 170 checkout before returning to his double four.
"It's always nice to win a tournament like this and I'm delighted," said van Gerwen. "I know I'm playing well and I've shown everyone again.
"I was strong from the beginning but I played a lot of good players, like Simon, Gary Anderson and Peter Wright. I'm full of confidence and I'm taking that into my games at the moment."
