Scott Waites: Seeded third for this year's BDO event at Frimley Green
Scott Waites booked his place in the second round of the BDO World Championships with a 3-0 win over Dutchman Willy van de Wiel.
The final scoreline may suggest it was a straightforward win for the 2010 Grand Slam of Darts champion, but Waites didn't have it all his own way in the final match on stage on Monday night at Frimley Green.
Van de Wiel missed two darts to take both the first two sets, allowing '2 Hotty' to pinch them. The third, though, turned out to be a procession, as the 35-year-old Yorkshireman won three legs in a hurry to go through.
Waites, who averaged just over 90 and hit five 180s, landed double four to book him a clash with Geert de Vos, who had seen off the challenge of Tony Eccles in a final-set decider earlier in the night.
Eccles - a 2007 quarter-finalist who is back in the BDO following a stint in the PDC - opened up proceedings with a 116 checkout as he raced through the first set without dropping a leg.
The Hartlepool thrower then won two more in a row to put himself in control of the second, only for De Vos to rally. He landed double four to get his first leg at the sixth attempt, changing the momentum of the contest.
De Vos checked out 100 on his way to winning the second set but after edging the third, Eccles pegged him back in emphatic fashion by hitting double tops twice in a row.
The Belgian, though, the had to hold his nerve in the fifth, a 116 finish of his own putting him a leg away before he ended a see-saw encounter by hitting the bull.
The other match saw something of an upset, Englisman Paul Jennings producing some superb finishing to knock out the sixth-seeded Ross Montgomery from Scotland.
