Defending BDO world champion Christian Kist has made a shock first round exit at the hands of Robbie Green at the Lakeside Country Club in Frimley Green.
The Dutchman was a shadow of the player that won last year's tournament as a rank outsider against Tony O'Shea.
Kist came into the event unseeded following a disappointing season and proved no match for the fifth seed known as 'Kong', eventually going down three sets to one.
Meanwhile, rookie Richie George - who hopes to follow in his dad Bobby's footsteps - came through a five-set thriller on his debut.
The 23-year-old, who reached the semi-finals of the Swiss Open and Welsh Masters, defeated Dave Prins 3-2 in a real tungsten tussle.
Earlier, Ireland's Jason Cullen came through 3-1 against 11th seed Martin Atkins while Garry Thompson dumped out another seed, Gary Robson by the same scoreline.
O'Shea on song
In the evening session, last year's beaten finalist O'Shea got his campaign off to a flying start with a convincing 3-0 triumph over Yorkshire's John Walton.
Number nine seed Alan Norris, who reached the quarter-finals last year, was also quickly into the groove as he saw off Wayne Warren of Wales 3-1.
Meanwhile, Darryl Fitton was made to battle all the way before he finally saw off Holland's Benito van de Pas 3-2 after a tense contest.
