This year's PDC World Championship saw its first nine-darter on Sunday as Dean Winstanley threw the perfect leg in his second round clash with Vincent van der Voort.

Winstanley produced his moment of magic in the third leg of the fourth set to send the crowd at Alexandra Palace into raptures.

The 31-year-old followed two 180s by hitting treble-20, treble-19 and then double-12 to check out 141, etching his name into World Championship folklore and securing a £15,000 prize.

Winstanley would go on to win the fourth set and level the match at two sets each having earlier found himself 2-0 down following a blistering start from Van der Voort who took the opening six legs.

But that would be as good as things got for the Englishman who would later pay for missing some crucial doubles as his Dutch opponent edged the fifth set to move 3-2 ahead.

Defeat was confirmed in painful fashion as, in the deciding leg of the sixth set, Winstanley managed to hit big 20 instead of big one to bust his turn, allowing Van der Voort to step in and find double-eight to clinch a 4-2 victory.

Distraught

"I'm distraught to have lost, but I've made a great impact and I'm proud of what I've done," said Winstanley.

"I'm over the moon to have hit a nine-darter on TV, especially in the World Championship, and I've proved to everyone that I can mix it with the best."

Van der Voort will now play James Wade in the third round next Thursday as he bids to win through to the quarter-finals for the second time in three years.

"In the first two sets I was totally in control and I felt great but the match changed after the nine-darter and I felt I had to do something special to win," he said.

"I think things turned back in my favour when I took the fifth set and I'm impressed with the way I closed out the match under that kind of pressure."
