Michael van Gerwen is through to the quarter-finals of the Grand Slam of Darts in Wolverhampton following a 10-5 win over four-time champion Phil Taylor.

The Dutchman averaged an incredible 108 in dispatching 'The Power', who did little wrong in the match but still ended up on the end of a drubbing.

Only a 125 checkout from Taylor ensured he led 4-3 after seven legs, although he was being put under pressure at every stage.

Van Gerwen held his next throw before a superb 130 checkout broke Taylor, giving him the lead for the first time in the match.

Thursday's results:

Dean Winstanley 10-5 Arron Monk
Kevin Painter 10-5 Mervyn King
Michael van Gerwen 10-5 Phil Taylor
Scott Waites 10-8 Robert Thornton

Taylor mustered only one more leg in the match as Van Gerwen romped home, a result he believes will give him even more confidence going into the latter stages of the tournament.

"The last few months I've played very well. After the group I was very confident," he told Sky Sports. "I didn't play my best game, but I knew I had to against Taylor. He's the man to beat.

"I was very glad I was playing my best again him. I'm so proud of myself. I'm practicing a lot. I'm working hard to make this happen. I'm very happy to beat Phil Taylor, but he's still the man to beat."

Elsewhere, Kevin Painter was on song as he bagged a 10-5 success over an inconsistent Mervyn King. The match was all square after four legs but five straight legs put Painter in control. Three more holds by 'The Artist' clinched the victory.

Dean Winstanley booked his place in the quarter-finals with a 10-5 win over youngster Arron Monk. Winstanley raced into a 3-0 lead and while Monk hit back to trail 4-3 the 31-year-old Yorkshireman responded and finished the match in style to progress.

The night's final match-up saw Scott Waites secure a 10-8 win over Robert Thornton, a result which means he faces Van Gerwen in the quarter-finals while Winstanley will now take on Painter in the last eight.
