The favourites

Tony Martin (Germany)
The 29-year-old is looking for a fourth world time trial title in a row and having won seven races against the clock this year, including at the Tour de France and Vuelta a Espana, he will be the man to beat. Sir Bradley Wiggins (Great Britain)
The Olympic and British national champion is one of the finest time-triallists of his generation and is likely to be Martin's biggest rival. He has won three time trials this year, including at this month's Tour of Britain, so has good form.

The outsiders

Adriano Malori (Italy)
The reigning Italian national champion has won short time trials at the Vuelta a Espana and Tirreno-Adriatico this season and is a rising force in the discipline. Tom Dumoulin (Netherlands)
The 23-year-old is one of the most promising young time-triallists in the sport. He is the reigning Dutch national champion and beat Cancellara in the time trial at the recent Eneco Tour, so has good form. Rohan Dennis (Australia)
The 24-year-old was a key part of BMC Racing's winning squad in Sunday's team time trial and put in a good performance in wet weather to finish third in the final-stage time trial at the Vuelta a Espana. Another up-and-coming talent who will be eyeing a place on the podium. Alex Dowsett (Great Britain)
The 25-year-old is Britain's second representative and will be keen to build on his recent win at the Commonwealth Games, when he beat the likes of Dennis and Geraint Thomas to gold.
