None of the Olympic-winning men's quartet were in action at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, and three members of an inexperienced squad tumbled to the track on the back straight after a touch of wheels with four laps to go in the 16-lap event.
It meant Andrew Tennant, world champion and an Olympic reserve, Sam Harrison, Owain Doull and Joe Kelly would not post a time in the event. Doull was the only rider to stay upright, but his three team-mates were able to walk away from the incident.
Tennant required stitches in his knee immediately after the incident but coach Chris Newton revealed there were no serious repercussions. He told British Cycling: "From what I could see man two Joe overlapped the wheel, man three and four have come down into him.
"The guys were doing really well. It's disappointing to crash"
Tennant added: "It's difficult to know what happened because I was changing onto fourth wheel at the time, but I imagine it was a touch of wheels.
"When you're trying to ride that close it's always difficult and one slight movement or overlap of the wheel means you can soon come down.
"Joe was probably above the wheel and Owain moved slightly up the track.
"We don't crash often and Joe's really upset but he doesn't have to be. Mistakes happen and that's bike racing.
Team GB's women fared significantly better however, with gold medal-winning duo Laura Trott and Dani King joining forces with Elinor Barker to post the second-fastest time in their qualifying heat behind Australia.
Also booking a place in the evening final was the new-look GB men's team sprint squad, with new recruit Ed Clancy joining Olympic champions Jason Kenny and Philip Hindes in setting the second quickest time.
The trio will meet Germany in the gold medal shootout, while Brit Jon Dibben began his omnium campaign with fifth in the flying lap.
