Sir Bradley Wiggins will return to the road on Sunday as he lines up in front of British fans at the RideLondon – Surrey Classic.
The Brit has been named as part of a six-man Team Sky squad for the one-day event on roads made famous by the 2012 London Olympic Games.
The race marks Wiggins’s first road action since June, when the 2012 Tour de France winner picked up the British national time trial title in Wales.
The 34-year-old then took a break to return to the track as part of an English silver medal-winning quartet at the recent Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Despite being beaten in the team pursuit final by Australia, the event marked a key first step on the road to the Rio Olympics for Wiggins, who has circled 2016 on the track as his major aim.
“I’m really looking forward to Sunday and to being back on the road with Team Sky," Wiggins told TeamSky.com.
"I always enjoy competing in front of home fans and have great memories of riding this route at the Olympics. The support we got then was unbelievable, and it was the same again at the Tour of Britain again last year, so this promises to be a really special day.”
Wiggins is the reigning Tour of Britain champion but it remains to be seen whether the race will form part of his late-season programme.
Commonwealth road race champion Geraint Thomas will also be back in Team Sky colours as part of an eight-man team set to line up at the start of the Eneco Tour (August 11-17).
