Rojas claims fourth to retain race leader's yellow jersey

Daryl Impey led a GreenEDGE one-two on the second stage of Vuelta al Pais Vasco. The South African had jumped out of the bunch inside the last kilometre of the 165.7 kilometres stage into Vitoria-Gasteiz and his move paid rich dividends as he just held off the onrushing peloton. It was team-mate Allan Davis who chased him home with arms aloft in celebration, with Team Sky's Davide Appollonio in third. Stage one winner José Joaquín Rojas was fourth which meant he retained his overall lead. It was a dramatic end to what had been a relatively predictable stage, with five riders forming an early breakaway and being allowed to stretch their advantage to seven minutes. Gabriele Bosisio (Utensilnord Named), Mads Christensen (Saxo Bank), Jérôme Pineau (Omega Pharma-Quick Step), Thibaut Pinot (FDJ-Big Mat) and Julián Sánchez (Caja Rural) were the riders in question but, just as it had 24 hours earlier, the gap came down rapidly in the second part of the stage. The Movistar team of Rojas was joined on the front by Euskaltel - Euskadi, Rabobank and RadioShack-Nissan which meant the quintet were caught on the Alto de Zaldiarin, the final climb of the day. That was crested with 9km remaining and a rapid descent into Vitoria-Gasteiz on slick roads had the peloton strung out, with Impey launching his stage-winning move soon after the flamme rouge. Attention now switches to the climbers for the next two days, starting with Wednesday's 164km route to Eibar (Arrate). Team Sky's general classification contenders - Michael Rogers, Sergio Henao, Thomas Löfkvist and Lars-Petter Nordhaug - all finished in the main group again and head into the rest of the race on the same time as Rojas.
