Peter Kennaugh completed overall victory of the Tour of Austria after successfully defending his lead on a flat final stage into Vienna won by home favourite Marco Haller.

Team Sky rider Kennaugh held a 1min 3sec advantage at the top of the general classification going into stage eight and avoided incident to secure the second stage-race win of his career.

Haller (Katusha) prevailed in a bunch sprint, beating Jacopo Guarnieri (Astana) into second and Raymond Kreder (Garmin-Sharp) into third.

Kennaugh’s victory continued a strong season in which he had already won the Settimana Coppi e Bartali and then been crowned British national road race champion.

“I’m really happy to be able to finish off the race and take the win," he told teamsky.com. “Heading into this year I really wanted to win a pro bike race as I was going into my fifth year as a pro without a victory. It was really good to do that at Coppi Bartali and then the nationals.

"I think I got a bit more confidence from those results. It was just nice to use it here and I’m happy I could finish it off. On the first day I wasn’t thinking much about the GC. I felt good and went for the stage and it’s gone from there really."
