Wiggins and Froome: Big plans
Sir Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome will begin their seasons at the Mallorca Challenge and the Tour of Oman respectively.
The Team Sky duo, who finished first and second at the Tour de France last season, will return to racing action in February as they build towards Grand Tour objectives later in the season.
Wiggins will kick off his campaign a little over a week before Froome in Mallorca where the team have been based throughout winter training.
From there the pair will likely join forces in Oman (February 11-16) before linking up with team-mates at a first mid-season training camp.
The team will again look to extensively utilise training camps as a stage race unit after enjoying a hugely successful 2012 using the same philosophy.
The probable race programmes, announced by Team Sky’s Head of Performance Support Tim Kerrison on Thursday, are subject to change but should see Froome head off to tackle Tirreno-Adriatico (March 6-12) while Wiggins returns to the Volta a Catalunya (March 18-24), one of the few blemishes of a near-perfect year last time out.
The reigning Tour de France champion will aim to add a second Grand Tour to his palmares in 2013 at May’s Giro d’Italia, and will aim to ride the Giro del Trentino (April 16-19) in preparation – his first race in Italy since Milan-Sanremo in 2011.
With the details of each rider’s schedule still being refined, Froome will take advantage of further training camps before competing at the Criterium du Dauphine (June 2-9) – a race the team has won for the last two years.
Both riders will line-up at the Tour de France (June 29-July 21) with the aim of securing a victory for Team Sky.
