Italy’s Matteo Trentin sprinted to victory on stage six of the Tour de Suisse as Omega Pharma – Quick-Step team-mate Tony Martin retained the overall race lead.

Trentin was given a powerful lead-out by Martin in the final 1km in Delemont and went on to beat compatriots Daniele Bennati (Tinkoff-Saxo) and Francesco Gavazzi (Astana) into second and third respectively.

Britain’s Ben Swift (Team Sky) safely crested two late climbs to contest the sprint finish but had to settle for fourth place, just ahead of pre-stage favourite Peter Sagan (Cannondale).

Martin crossed the line just behind the leaders to consolidate his six-second lead over Tom Dumoulin (Giant-Shimano) in the general classification, while Sagan remains ten seconds adrift in third.

Trentin said: "Tony did an unbelievable job. He left me at 200 meters to go. The finish was slightly uphill. I accelerated and was able to do a good sprint. I like this kind of sprint."

Sagan show

Stage six took the riders 183.5km from Buren a Aaare to Delemont on a rolling route ending with two categorised climbs and then a descent down to a flat finish.

Sagan showed his fine form by attacking just short of the summit of the second climb, the category-three Le Rond-Pre, and although he was caught, the Slovak once again distanced the peloton with a virtuoso display of descending down the other side.

A clutch of riders bridged across to him on the flat road heading into Delemont, but Team Sky chased hard to bring the race back together and set up a sprint.

Martin, with Trentin right behind him, then hit the front and split the peloton with a fierce increase in pace inside the last 1km. Although the likes of Sagan managed to chase back, they were unable to return to the head of affairs and Trentin profited with a well-timed winning burst.
