Britain's Geraint Thomas moved up to fourth place overall at Bayern Rundfahrt in Germany after snatching two bonus seconds at an intermediate sprint on stage three.

The Team Sky rider finished the day 21st, on the same time as winner Daryl Impey, but his efforts earlier in the stage saw him climb one place overall and to within 14 seconds of race leader Matthias Frank.

The 26-year-old is now well-placed to win the race for the second time given that Saturday's fourth stage is a 25.5km individual time trial and that Thomas is one of the strongest riders against the clock among the general classification contenders.

Impey claimed his second win of the season in Neusass but remains over one minute down overall, while stage two winner Frank safely retained his lead by finishing stage three in the peloton, in 41st place.

Thomas's previous victory at Bayern Rundfahrt was in 2011.
