Reigning Tour de France champion Chris Froome says he will make a reconnaissance trip to Yorkshire this spring in order to scout the opening stages of the 2014 race.

The English county will host the Grand Depart of this year's Tour, with the peloton travelling from Leeds to Harrogate on the opening day before racing between York and Sheffield on day two.

The second stage in particular has been pinpointed as a potential flashpoint as it winds through the South Pennines and takes in the peak of Holme Moss, one of the most famous climbs in Britain.

The route then heads over undulating terrain to the finish, with the short but brutally steep climb of Jenkin Road ensuring that the general classification contenders will have to be aware of any attacks or splits in the bunch.

Kenya-born Froome admits that he is overly not familiar with the terrain in Yorkshire but will be riding the roads this spring as part of his preparation.

"It's not an area that I know very well at all," he told Sky Sports News.

"I've been up there a couple of times but I'm going to be going back this year early in spring to have a look at some of the stages we are going to be doing over the first three days of the Tour de France.

"Generally there is a big buzz around that, there is a lot of excitement and the team really is looking forward to the start over in Yorkshire. It really is going to be quite exciting for us."
