Laura Trott trails Sarah Hammer by seven points with two events remaining

Laura Trott's hopes of regaining her world omnium title are hanging by a thread after the 21-year-old Briton fell seven points behind leader and defending champion Sarah Hammer with only two events remaining.

Trott started the day six points adrift of the American in second place and needed to make significant inroads into that deficit in the fourth of six events, the individual pursuit.

However, racing against each other in the final heat, Hammer recovered from falling behind early to beat Trott into second spot and claim her third victory of the competition so far.

Trott, who won the crown in 2012, now requires two flawless performances in the last two events, the scratch race and time trial, while also hoping Hammer suffers a catastrophic collapse. Australia's Annette Edmondson occupies third position, eight points behind Trott.

Elsewhere on the final day of the Track Cycling World Championships in Colombia, defending champion Becky James and fellow Briton Jess Varnish are through to the semi-finals of the women's keirin.

Both failed to progress from their first-round heats - James won hers but was later relegated - but they got a second chance in the repechages and this time made no mistake.

The third Briton in the competition, Victoria Williamson, was unable to finish in the top two in her repechage and has been eliminated.
