Vuelta a Espana winner Chris Horner's season is over after the veteran American broke ribs in Sunday's world championship road race in Tuscany.
The 41-year-old RadioShack-Leopard rider was involved in a large crash on the first of 10 laps of a rain-soaked finishing circuit around Florence.
Horner suffered fractures to the back side of his ribs and has been ruled out of the Giro di Lombardia on Sunday and next week's Tour of Beijing, both of which he had been scheduled to ride.
Horner said: "Everything went well in the last couple of months, except for the World Championships.
"Broken ribs are really painful and I will be off the bike for at least two or three weeks. It is sad that I can't finish my season on a good note in Lombardy or China."
