Luke Rowe has replaced Jonathan Tiernan-Locke in the Great Britain team for Sunday's Road World Championships road race.

Devon climber Tiernan-Locke has endured a tough first season with Team Sky because of illness and injury.

Tiernan-Locke confirmed on Twitter the decision had been made because of his lack of recent form, and Rowe replaces him ahead of the other reserve riders Andy Fenn and Alex Dowsett.

The Welshman will be part of a strong support team aiming to give Tour de France winner Chris Froome his first world title and cap what has been a dream season.

The full team will be Froome, Sir Bradley Wiggins, 2011 champion Mark Cavendish, Ian Stannard, Steve Cummings, Geraint Thomas, Josh Edmondson and Rowe.

Sunday's race lasts a testing 270km, including 10 circuits of Florence and more than 58kms of climbing.
