Tom Boonen has endured a torrid 2013
Tom Boonen has been ruled out of this month's Eneco Tour as he continues to struggle with a cyst.
The 32-year-old Belgian is unable to train properly and had already been forced to miss last week's Tour of Denmark.
The cyst is located where Boonen sits on the saddle and it is not yet known when he will be able to return to racing.
It is the latest setback in a frustrating season for the Omega Pharma - Quick-Step rider, who required surgery on an elbow infection in January, saw his Classics campaign wiped out by crashes and only registered his first win of the year at the Tour de Wallonie last month.
"I'm really disappointed," he said. "I really like the Eneco Tour and it is too bad I can't be at the starting line, but right now it is essential that I take the proper time to heal from this cyst, which is preventing me from training consistently and which I don't want to underestimate.
"I have to say 2013 has definitely not been my year. Now the goal is to get better and get back to the races in the month of September, even though, as things are now, we can't really set any definite date for a return."
The Eneco Tour takes place over seven stages in the Netherlands from August 12-18.
Boonen led last year's race for two days, before eventually finishing 17th.
