Mark Cavendish's run of four wins in a row came to an end as Germany's Paul Martens made a late break for victory on stage one of the Volta ao Algarve in Portugal.

Cavendish had been the favourite to triumph after dominating on his way to overall victory at last week's Tour of Qatar, but could only finish sixth.

He was one of a number of sprinters caught off guard by Martens (Blanco), who broke clear of the peloton along with Tiago Machado (RadioShack-Leopard) in the closing kilometres and hung on for an unexpected win.

Theo Bos edged the bunch sprint to make it two Blanco riders in the top three, but it was a disappointing result for Cavendish, who travelled to the Algarve in search of his seventh win of the season.

He should get another chance tomorrow, as stage two's 195km route, which starts and finishes in Lagoa, appears set for another sprint finish.

Martens, meanwhile, has moved into overall leadership of the race. Thanks to the 10, six and four bonus seconds on offer at the finish line, he leads Machado by four seconds and Bos by six.

Earlier in the day, a five-man break headed up the road as the race left Faro, with the quintet lasting until the 9km banner before being caught as the peloton prepared for a bunch finish. Martens and Machado, however, had other ideas.
