Lucy Garner: Won by a comfortable margin to take her second world title
Lucy Garner sprinted to a second consecutive junior world title at the World Road Race Championships in Holland.
The Brit backed up her gold medal performance in Copenhagen 12 months earlier with a decisive turn of speed following 65 kilometres of hard racing.
A day after her 18th birthday, Garner won the sprint comfortably with Eline Brustad (Norway) and Anna Zita Maria Stricker (Italy) rounding out the podium spots in Limburg.
The peloton had found itself stretched out in the closing stages, a group of 22 riders breaking clear as the race approached the infamous Cauberg climb.
With the help of team-mate, and fellow world champion following Monday’s time trial, Elinor Barker, Garner was able to position herself well heading into the final kilometre to cap a golden championships for Great Britain’s junior women.
Yorkshire’s Jessie Walker was the next Brit across the line, 31st in her world championship debut and 18 seconds back on her victorious team-mate.
