Valverde retains Tour of Spain gold jersey after stage 14

Lampre's Damiano Cunego claimed his second stage win of this year's Tour of Spain with a magnificent solo ride to the summit finish at Sierra de la Pandera. The Italian once again showed his prowess in the mountains, defying wet conditions to complete stage 14's 157-kilometre route from Grenada more than two minutes clear of his nearest challenger. Dane Jacob Fuglsang, of Saxo Bank, was second across the line, two minutes and 23 seconds behind Cunego, with Spain's Samuel Sanchez taking third for Euskaltel. Sanchez's performance moved him up from fifth to third in the overall standings, just over a minute behind gold jersey incumbent Alejandro Valverde, who finished fifth on the day after resisting a series attacks from his general classification rivals.
