English rider Steve Cummings pipped Alejandro Valverde to victory in the second race of the four-day Challenge Mallorca.

Cummings, 33, who was making his debut for South African team MTN-Qhubeka, won the Trofeo Andratx following a late attack on the climb to the finish at Mirador d'Es Colomer.

It was an impressive scalp for the 33-year-old given that Valverde was the world’s No 1-ranked rider in 2014.

Cannondale-Garmin’s Davide Formolo finished six seconds down in third, while Leopold Konig was the first of three Team Sky riders in the top ten in fifth.

Challenge Mallorca is a made up of four one-day races. Saturday’s third race is the hilly Trofeo Serra de Tramuntana.
