Movistar’s Adriano Malori won stage five’s individual time trial at the Tour de San Luis in Argentina as home favourite Daniel Diaz extended his overall lead of the race.
Malori stopped the clock on a 17.4km course starting and finishing in San Luis in a time of 20min 4sec, which was four seconds faster than runner-up Michal Kwiatkowski and five seconds ahead of third-placed Hugo Houle.
Diaz finished tenth on the day but was quicker than all of his closest rivals in the general classification and has stretched his lead over second-placed Rodolfo Torres to 1min 9sec.
Nairo Quintana, who won the race in 2014, has climbed to third overall but has drifted out to 1min 25sec behind Diaz.
The result puts the 25-year-old Argentinian firmly on course to win the tour for the second time in three years, with just Saturday’s summit finish on Filo Sierras Comechingones and then Sunday’s sprint stage into San Luis remaining.
Malori repeated his victory in last year's time trial at the Tour de San Luis, while Briton's Mark Cavendish finished the day in 38th place, 1min 48sec down on the winner.
