Orla Chennaoui: Behind the scenes at the Tour Down Under

Sky Sports' Orla Chennaoui reports from Australia on the sixth and final stage of the Tour Down Under.

The locals were always going to have something to celebrate on Australia Day with Simon Gerrans all but certain to become the first rider to win the Tour Down Under three times.

The battle on the road though was widely predicted to be between the two big German sprinting machines, Andre Greipel and Marcel Kittel. In the end if was the former who demonstrated why he's win more stages at this race than any other rider.

Indeed, talking to crowd-pleaser Jens Voigt after the race, he pointed out that Kittel has struggled to finish in the front group on almost every stage, showing just how tough this race has become and how seriously the riders are taking it.

As for Team Sky, it was always going to be a tough ask to deliver Luke Rowe to the line first, but they should be fairly content with the season curtain-raiser.

Richie Porte's claiming of Cadel Evans' scalp on Old Willunga Hill was done in such dramatic fashion that it was clear his mind was already on the roads of Italy.

If the past week has given us a taste of what to expect for the season ahead then I, for one, am very excited about 2014.
