Brad Haddin's Test career looked as good as over just a few months ago.

After dropping out of the tour of West Indies in 2012 due to an illness in his family, Haddin saw his spot snapped up by Matthew Wade, who seemed set for a long stint as Australia's Test wicketkeeper.

But after showing he still had what it takes with both gloves and bat - Haddin averaged 57.25 in the Sheffield Shield last summer - and Wade struggled with consistency in Test cricket, Haddin was all of a sudden back in the frame for the Ashes.

However, while his selection in the touring party wasn't a huge surprise given Australia were always going to take two wicketkeepers, his ascension to the position of vice-captain certainly did come as a shock.

The 35-year-old took it all in his stride though, and is now set to play a key role against England.

For many cricket fans, it doesn't seem that long ago that Haddin was the perennial understudy to the great Adam Gilchrist.

In fact, despite his veteran status, Haddin only nailed down a permanent spot in the Test side after Gilchrist retired in 2008, meaning he's had just four full years in international cricket.

But, given his impressive numbers at Test level - 169 dismissals and a batting average of 35.50 - and Australia's fragile batting order, Haddin is fully aware of his importance to Australia's Ashes hopes.
