- Test Debut: v New Zealand at Lord's, May 2004
- ODI Debut: v Sri Lanka at Dambulla, November 18 2003
- Born in South Africa, but learned his cricket in England at Radley College and Durham University.
- An opening batsman with solid technique and sound temperament.
- Scored a hundred on his Test debut, and repeated the trick in his first overseas Test and his first as captain.
- An accumulator of runs rather than a big-hitter, he has the ability to keep the scoreboard ticking over without the need to hit boundaries.
- Captained side for the injured Michael Vaughan during series victory against Pakistan in 2006.
- Overlooked as captain for the disastrous 2006-07 Ashes series and managed only two half-centuries in 20 innings on tour.
- After a barren summer in 2007, he was left out of England's squad for the winter tour of Sri Lanka.
- England's batting woes on that tour prompted a rethink, and Strauss was back in the squad for the tour of New Zealand in 2008, making a career-best 177 in the third Test of the series to cement his return to the side.
- Scored two centuries in the first Test against India in December 2008 but still ended on the losing side.
- Handed the England captaincy following Kevin Pietersen's resignation.
- After losing his first series as full-time skipper in the West Indies, he turned things round in fine style and led from the front with a man-of-the-series performance as England regained the Ashes.
- Had a disappointing Test series with the bat in South Africa, but led the side to a creditable 1-1 draw.
- After sitting out the tour of Bangladesh, returned to lead the side to a 2-0 home victory over the Tigers in May 2010. Scored two 80-odds in the first Test at Lord's.
- Captained England to a 3-2 NatWest Series win over Australia.
- Hit back from disappointment of England's first ever defeat to Bangladesh to crash ODI-best 154 in decider. ENgland won by 144 runs.
