Michael Carberry was onto his third county before he began to make an impact at domestic level and has been making up for lost time ever since.
Carberry, a left-handed opener from Croydon, made little impact at Surrey and Kent early in his career but things clicked after he joined Hampshire.
He scored 1,000 first-class runs in the summers of 2007 and 2009 to catch the eye of the England selectors and made his Test debut on the tour of Bangladesh in early 2010.
He made scores of 30 and 34 in England's 181-run win in Chittagong but appeared destined to be remembered as a 'one-cap wonder' when blood clots on his lungs later that year threatened a premature end to his career.
Carberry recovered and, in the summer of 2013 at the age of 32, scored runs for fun in the limited-overs formats to once again put his name in the England frame.
With Alastair Cook rested, he was given a chance in the one-day series against Australia and, despite being involved in two run outs with opening partner Kevin Pietersen, an innings of 63 in Cardiff helped England recover from 8-3 to reach a target of 228.
It was still something of a surprise, even to the man himself, to see Carberry's name included in the Ashes touring party given his modest form in Division Two of the County Championship in the last two years.
In addition to his batting, Carberry is quick in the field and - despite a couple of drops on his ODI debut - a safe pair of hands.
