- Played for England at the Under-19 World Cup in 2003.
- Selected for the England A tour to West Indies in 2006.
- Selected for England's preliminary squad for the 2006 Champions Trophy
- Part of Academy squad during the winter's Ashes series.
- Made his ODI debut against Australia at Sydney, and claimed the wicket of Mike Hussey to help England kick-start their trophy-winning campaign.
- After some good ODI displays, he got his opportunity in Test cricket in 2007, but struggled and scored just 42 runs in three matches against Sri Lanka.
- Following a spell out of the England team, he was called up for the home and away series against the Windies and he responded with three Test tons. That secured him a place in the Ashes squad.
- It was a disastrous campaign though as he scored just 105 runs in seven innings before he was finally chopped for the final Test.
- Was part of the successful World Twenty20 squad in the West Indies, but played just once, scoring nine against New Zealand.
- Injuries to Kevin Pietersen and Ian Bell saw him return to the one-day side against Bangladesh in July 2010, and he took his chance with an unbeaten 16-ball 45 not out and four wickets as England won by 144 runs.
