The word enigma is bandied about a lot in sport, but Usman Khawaja seems more suited to the title than most.
There is a lot riding on Khawaja's future - with Cricket Australia desperately looking to expand its so-called "pale, male and stale" image, the Pakistan-born batsman represents a future where the national cricket team will be a true representation of Australian society.
But of more immediate concern is Khawaja's form with the bat.
Having forced his way into the Test side during the 2010-2011 Ashes through sheer weight of runs - he averaged over 70 in that Sheffield Shield season - Khawaja's debut Test innings became the most hyped in recently memory.
It wasn't the score he made - which was a creditable 37 - but the manner in which he made it that really excited Australian cricket fans during one of their darkest hours.
Despite his ease on the eye, Khawaja failed to cement his spot in the Test side, and hasn't featured in a baggy green since December 2011.
A move from New South Wales to Queensland at the start of last summer gave the 26-year-old a new lease on life, and he has been the next batsman in line for the Test side for the best part of six months.
With Australia's batsmen under constant scrutiny for their inconsistent performances, it seems a recall is just around the corner for qualified pilot Khawaja.
