Gary Ballance is the latest batting product of southern Africa to get his chance in England's Test squad.
Born in Harare, Ballance represented Zimbabwe at the Under 19 World Cup in 2006 while also developing his career in county cricket with Derbyshire.
But opportunities dried up for the teenager in Derby and he switched to Yorkshire in 2007, making his first-class debut against Kent the following summer.
The left-hander is a forthright stroke maker who has enjoyed plenty of success in the limited-overs formats.
His first-class average in excess of 50 is inflated by some cheap runs for Mid West Rhinos in Zimbabwe's domestic tournament.
But he passed 1,000 runs in a summer for the first time in 2013 and was the middle-order driving force in a Yorkshire team that finished second in the County Championship.
Ballance made his England debut in the one-off ODI against Ireland in Dublin in September, although it was a day to forget as he made a two-ball duck.
His selection in the Ashes tour squad was something of a left-field call, the 23-year-old being preferred to more experienced candidates such as James Taylor, Ravi Bopara and Eoin Morgan.
