Yorkshireman Bairstow has followed in the footsteps of his father David by making it into the England Test team and the 23-year-old is one of the most exciting young talents in the game.

Like his father, Bairstow keeps wicket, but he is so accomplished with the bat that he usually plays for England as a specialist in that role, with Matt Prior retaining the gloves in Tests.

Bairstow made his mark on the game at a young age and was named Wisden Schools Cricketer of the Year in 2007, having already played for England at U17 level.

Given a first-class debut by Yorkshire in 2009, he soon established himself in the side and was given a one-day international call-up by England for a game with India at Cardiff in September 2011.

Bairstow responded to his selection with a man-of-the-match display, hitting 41 not out from just 21 balls to lift England to a Duckworth-Lewis success.

His Test debut did not go so smoothly against the West Indies in the spring of 2012 and fast bowlers unsettled him with some short-pitched bowling.

Having made 16 and 0 not out on his debut at Lord's, he went for four at Trent Bridge and 18 at Edgbaston, before being dropped for the home series against South Africa.

England were beaten 2-0 by the tourists but Bairstow proved talk of a possible weakness against the short ball was nonsense when he found himself back in the side at The Oval, after Kevin Pietersen was dropped for sending indiscreet texts.

Coming in to face South Africa's top-notch pace attack with England 54-4, Bairstow got England back into the game with a brilliant 95, following up with 54 off just 47 balls in his second innings.

The hard-hitting right-hander missed time over the winter due to a family illness but again showed his aptitude for Test cricket this spring, making 64 against New Zealand in a victory at Headingley and adding 124 with his Yorkshire pal Joe Root.
