Kraigg Brathwaite hits 205 not out as West Indies assert in Kingstown

Kraigg Brathwaite notched an unbeaten double-century to put West Indies in complete control of the first Test against Bangladesh in Kingstown.

The opener notched 205 not out as the hosts progressed from an overnight 264-3 to 407-3 on a rain-hit second day at Arnos Vale Sports Complex.

Overnight downpours continued into the morning and meant there was no play possible before lunch.

When play eventually resumed, there was little in the way of attacking cricket from Brathwaite or Shivnarine Chanderpaul, but the pair dug in to notch an unbeaten partnership of 146.

Veteran Chanderpaul, who made his Test debut as a 19-year-old against in England in 1994, turned 40 in August and played a pedestrian part in proceedings. He plodded to 51, while his 21-year-old batting partner advanced at a slightly more eager gait from his overnight score of 123.

Brathwaite faced 11 balls while stuck on 199, before cracking away what was the first boundary for exactly 25 overs, that statistic in itself a reflection of the strangely patient approach the fourth-wicket pair were applying.

With his maiden double hundred, Brathwaite, in just his 13th Test, went two runs beyond Chanderpaul's highest Test score.

Chanderpaul brought up his 64th Test fifty as the end of play approached and he ended on 51.

The lack of any recognisable urgency may end up costing the West Indies, particularly if wet weather intervenes again, however a promising forecast suggested they would have ample time to take on the Bangladesh batsmen.
