Sir Ian Botham says punters should lump on Joe Root to be England's top run scorer in the second Test against India, starting at Lord's on Thursday.

Root hit a match-saving 154 not out and shared in a record breaking last wicket stand with James Anderson, in the drawn first Test and with skipper Alastair Cook and Ian Bell both desperately short of runs, Beefy feels the value in backing the Yorkshireman at 5/1 with Sky Bet is too good to ignore.

"It's got to be Joe for me. He played superbly last week and is the man in form," said the Sky Sports cricket expert.

England have lost only once in 16 meetings with India at the home of cricket and Botham is tipping Cook's side at 13/8 to end their nine-match winless run and go 1-0 up in the series.

Backers who followed Beefy's Bets at Trent Bridge were rewarded as James Anderson returned at odds of 2/1 to be England's leading wicket taker in the first innings.

Botham is also expecting great things from England's seamers on a green Lord's wicket and expects Anderson at 9/4 to have a key say in the match.

He added: "The greener the wicket the better for Jimmy. He'll be fuming after what has happened in the last few days."
