Alex Hales is to join Mumbai Indians after agreeing a short-term deal to play in the on-going Indian Premier League.

The big-hitting England batsman has stayed at Trent Bridge for Friday's T20 opener against holders Birmingham Bears, before travelling to India.

And if Mumbai fail to qualify for next week's knockout stages of the tournament, he will return in time for Nottinghamshire’s next home match against Yorkshire.

Hales will definitely miss his county's next Division One meeting with Somerset which starts on Sunday.

Nottinghamshire director of cricket Mick Newell said: "It's disappointing for us to lose Alex during this period but playing in the tournament is an ambition for him that we understand and have been aware of this for three years.

"We know there are players in our squad with prospects of playing international cricket or in the IPL, and the signing of Brendan Taylor was made to cover us for this kind of eventuality."
