Dav Whatmore has been named as the new Zimbabwe coach.

Zimbabwe Cricket said the former Sri Lanka and Bangladesh coach will be in charge during the World Cup, which starts on February 14th.

The Australian replaces Stephen Mangongo, who was fired on December 18 after the disastrous tour of Bangladesh.

Whatmore, 60, and Zimbabwe Cricket are hoping to sign a longer-term contract after the World Cup.

Under the deal, Zimbabwe players will also receive coaching from Whatmore's Dubai-based cricket academy.

Whatmore, whose last coaching job was with Pakistan, helped Afghanistan, Ireland, Scotland and UAE prepare for the 50-over tournament earlier this year as part of the International Cricket Council’s High Performance Programme.

The highlight of his coaching career was being in charge when Sri Lanka won the World Cup in 1996.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe have failed to clinch a deal with former captain and coach Dave Houghton as Whatmore's assistant and team batting coach due to his commitments with Middlesex.
