New Zealand coach Mike Hesson insists England’s World Cup chances should not be written off despite their humiliating defeat to the Black Caps on Friday.

England have lost their opening two games in the tournament but can still reach the quarter-finals with four pool-stage games remaining.

“The way the format is, you can get on a roll," Hesson said.

"England have got to get on a roll now but you can turn it around. The way the format is, if you can make the quarter-finals, anyone can win it.

"England are a good side and I'm sure they will have other good days in the tournament. We've all had the odd bad day at the office."

Hesson praised bowling coach Shane Bond for his analysis of the England batsmen after Tim Southee's match-winning exhibition of swing bowling.

Southee's return of 7-33 was the best by a New Zealand bowler in a one-day international - stealing the record away from Bond.

"We scouted the English really well in terms of our plans and Shane Bond did some excellent work there," Hesson said.

"We're pretty calm as a group and we know what we need to bring in terms of intensity. We were going to bat but the fact we bowled with the crowd certainly created a bit of extra intensity which was great."
