New Zealand have picked veteran all-rounder Grant Elliott and fast bowler Trent Boult in their 15-man squad for the World Cup.

Elliott, 35, won the last of his 51 one-day international caps in November 2013, but has received a recall for a tournament his country are co-hosting with Australia.

Boult's outstanding Test form has seen the 25-year-old force his way into the squad, with his 110 wickets in the five-day game - including 11 in the recent 2-0 series victory over Sri Lanka - illustrating his potency as a strike bowler.

But Boult has yet to replicate that form in the 50-over game, with just 10 wickets from his 10 ODIs to date.

New Zealand have also opted for experience in other selection decisions, with seamer Kyle Mills, 35, and spinner Daniel Vettori, also 35, both making the squad.

"There were some hard decisions to make, but we're pleased with the overall 15 we've chosen," said New Zealand coach Mike Hesson.

"A lot of bowlers have performed brilliantly for us over the past couple of seasons, which certainly made it difficult, but we think we have the right mix.

"Our batting unit has good depth and Grant's inclusion assures us strong cover in the middle order. He brings a lot of experience and his record in New Zealand and Australia conditions is excellent."

The Black Caps have also picked Tim Southee, Mitchell McClenaghan and tearaway Adam Milne in the bowling department, with regulars Kane Williamson, Ross Taylor and captain Brendon McCullum forming the backbone of the batting line-up.

New Zealand begin their campaign against Sri Lanka on February 14 before taking on Australia, England, Scotland, Bangladesh and Afghanistan in Pool A.

Squad: Brendon McCullum (captain), Corey Anderson, Trent Boult, Grant Elliott, Martin Guptill, Tom Latham, Mitchell McClenaghan, Nathan McCullum, Kyle Mills, Adam Milne, Luke Ronchi, Tim Southee, Ross Taylor, Daniel Vettori, Kane Williamson.
